Ratzer had a brief career as a pitcher for the Montreal Expos. After making his major-league debut during the final game of the 1980 season, Ratzer appeared in 12 games for the Expos, compiling a 1-1 mark with a 6.23 ERA. He achieved his lone big-league win pitching in relief on April 28, 1981. A few weeks later, after giving up a game-winning homer to the Dodgers’ Pedro Guerrero, he was sent back to the minors.
Steve is the only Jewish player to play in a major-league game for the Montreal Expos franchise, though Norm Sherry also suited up as a bullpen coach from 1978-81.
