Today in Jewish baseball history

1999 — Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Shawn Green and Philadelphia Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal become the first Jewish players to win Gold Glove Awards for outstanding fielding.

2005 — After delivering his annual address to major-league general managers, Bud Selig tells reporters he favors revised congressional legislation that would suspend players for a half-season for using steroids. The commissioner also states his opposition to using instant replay.

2005 — SNY names Gary Cohen as the new television play-by-play announcer for the New York Mets.

Birthday

Jerry Weinstein, 1973 — Since 1966, he has coached at the high school, college, minor-league, major-league and international level, including Team Israel in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, he received the Tony Gwynn Lifetime Achievement Award from Baseball America.
