Today in Jewish baseball history

1895 — Andrew Freedman purchases a controlling interest in the New York Giants for approximately $53,000.

1900 — With Baltimore cut from the National League, stockholders organize a new team in the city which will compete in the American Association. Board member Harry Goldman is named team secretary-treasurer.

1948 — Pacific Coast League directors approve Chicago attorney Oscar Salenger as majority owner of the Sacramento Solons. Salenger was former owner of the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association.

1960 — Hal Charnofsky is named player-manager of the Greensboro Yankees of the Class B Carolina League. The infielder will hit only .228, but Greensboro will win the league championship.

Chicago Cubs agreed to a five-year, $175 million contract with free-agent 3B Alex Bregman,

Washington Nationals signed 1B Matt Mervis to a minor-league contract.

Toronto Blue Jays signed President and CEO Mark Shapiro to a five-year contract extension.

Colorado Rockies named Alon Leichman pitching coach.

Houston Astros named Ethan Katz pitching coach.
