1933 — New York Giants manager John J. McGraw names Newark Bears shortstop Andy Cohen his starting second baseman, replacing future Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby.

2008 — Arizona State first baseman/pitcher Ike Davis is named Pac-10 Conference player of the week for the second consecutive week with two homers in a 6-5 win over Arkansas and an 8-1 victory over Troy.

Birthday

Mickey Rutner, 1920 — The third baseman had a .295 career batting average in the minor leagues. He hit .250 in 12 games for Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics in 1947.
