1940 — The Detroit Tigers’ roster lists Hank Greenberg as an outfielder. The willingness of the team’s leading power hitter to switch, at a salary increase, from first base allows manager Del Baker to find a position for Rudy York. Greenberg responds by  leading AL left fielders in putouts and assists and slugging 41 homers to become the first player to win MVP awards at two positions.

1946 — Hank Greenberg signs a contract with the Detroit Tigers for $60,000. He marries New York department store heiress Carol Gimbel three days later.

1949 — The Cleveland Indians purchase right-handed pitcher Hal Saltzman from the Portland Beavers in a $100,000 package deal that sends $30,000 cash and five players to the Pacific Coast League team. Saltzman makes the Indians’ Opening Day roster in 1950, but is returned to the San Diego Padres of the PCL a day later. He never appears in a major-league game.

1956 — Lou Limmer hits his third home run in the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico’s 4-2 loss to Cuba.

2020 — Jared Shuster strikes out 12 batters in six innings without issuing a walk as Wake Forest defeats Wis.-Milwaukee 19-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.
