1911 — Pittsburgh Pirates owner Barney Dreyfuss proposes that each team in the World Series be required to turn over one-fourth of its share of the gate to the league, to be divided among the other teams. Until now, 10 percent of the gross went to the National Commission, 60 percent to the players, and the rest to the two pennant-winning clubs.
1949 — The New York Giants trade outfielder/third baseman Sid Gordon and three other players to the Boston Braves for Al Dark and Eddie Stankey. In four seasons with the Braves in Boston and Milwaukee, Gordon bats .289 with exactly 100 home runs and drives in 362 runs.
1954 — Rookie Sandy Koufax signs a two-year contract worth $6,000 with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The pitcher receives a $14,000 signing bonus, but the team is required to keep him on the major-league roster for the entire 1955 season.
2012 — Kevin Youkilis, best known for being a member of Boston’s World Championship teams in 2004 and 2007, signs a one-year, $12 million deal with the rival New York Yankees. The Red Sox had traded Youkilis to the Chicago White Sox in June.
