Today in Jewish baseball history

1934 — Visiting Japan as part of a major-league All-Stars tour, catcher Moe Berg films Tokyo’s skyline from a hospital roof. The film will allegedly be used as a guide for United States bombers during World War II.

1962 — Sale of the Cleveland Indians is completed as Gabe Paul and Bill Daley take control.

2013 — The Texas Rangers trade second baseman Ian Kinsler to the Detroit Tigers for Prince Fielder and cash. Kinsler will hit .275 with 78 homers and 300 RBIs in four seasons with the Tigers.

2014 — Former Texas Rangers pitcher Aaron Poreda signs with the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Central League. He’ll appear in 29 games over the next two seasons in Japan.

2020 — With one year remaining on his contract, Theo Epstein works his final day as the Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations. He had held the position for nine seasons.

Birthdays

Mike Schemer, 1917 — A son of an Orthodox rabbi, Schemer made his debut for the New York Giants in 1945. Despite hitting .333 in 31 games, the Giants were looking for more power at first base. In 1946, he got only one pinch-hit appearance and never played again in the big leagues.

Sam Fuld, 1981 — Fuld made his major league debut in 2007 and played for the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland A’s and Minnesota Twins until 2015. Known for his highlight reels of great catches in the outfield, Fuld was named Philadelphia Phillies general manager in 2021.
