Today in Jewish baseball history

1939 — Max Rosenfeld, who managed at Jackson (Miss.) of the Southeastern League the previous season, is named player/manager at Panama City of the Alabama-Florida League.

1942 — Former UCLA basketball player Sam Balter joins radio station WCPO in Cincinnati to do a nightly sportscast and recreate by wire the Cincinnati Reds’ exhibition games.

1992 — Steve Solomon of Stanford hits for the cycle against California.

2017 — Nate Freiman’s RBI double sparks a three-run first inning, and Israel defeats The Netherlands 4-2 to win Pool A of the World Baseball Classic in South Korea. Zach Borenstein and tournament MVP Ryan Lavarnway also drive in runs. Josh Zeid, who works out of a jam in the eighth, stays on to pitch a scoreless ninth and earn his second save.
