Today in Jewish baseball history

1961 — The Houston Colt .45s select outfielder Don Taussig from the St. Louis Cardinals with the 19th overall pick in the expansion draft. He’ll appear in 16 games for Houston in 1962, his final major league season.

2019 — Gabe Kapler is fired as Philadelphia Phillies manager after going 161-163 in two seasons. A month later, he will be hired as manager of the San Francisco Giants.

2023 — Alex Bregman hits his 16th postseason home run as the Houston Astros rout the Minnesota Twins 9-1 to take a 2-1 lead in the American League Division Series. Game summary

Birthdays

Harry Eisenstat, 1915 — Making his debut with his hometown Dodgers in 1935, he also pitched for the Tigers and Indians over eight MLB seasons. In 1938 he was the winning pitcher in both games of a doubleheader against the A’s.

Saul Rogovin, 1922 — He pitched for the Tigers, White Sox, Orioles and Phillies from 1949 to 1957, compiling a 48-48 record. He led the American League with a 2.78 ERA in 1951 despite being traded from Detroit to Chicago midseason.
