A Rabbi’s Collection, Inning by Inning
The 1988 film “Bull Durham” opens with character Annie Savoy saying she “believes in the church of baseball.”
After reading a book by Rabbi Steven Rubenstein of Rochester, N.Y., it’s hard not to believe in “the synagogue of baseball.”
Rabbi Steve’s delightful, beautifully illustrated 90-page book is titled “In the BIG-Inning.”
The book’s individual chapters are presented as “innings,” such as “Fifth-inning: The Five Jewish Players You Ought to Meet in Heaven,” and “Eighth-inning: Cohen at the Bat.”
Rabbi Steven touches all the bases in this “spiritual realm of baseball.” Each inning is a step on a journey that is filled with emotions. He tells personal stories behind the baseball cards and other memorabilia in his collection — mostly of Jewish ballplayers.
