A brother of Erskine Mayer, Sam had only a brief stint as an outfielder for the Washington Senators in 1915. He hit .241 with 1 homer in 37 games. He was fine a defensive outfielder, making many spectacular plays in the minors. But his bat never was good enough to keep him in the big leagues.
