Born in San Francisco, Mayer had a brief career, pitching 22 games for the Cubs in 1957 and 1958. He compiled a 2-2 record with a 4.31 ERA. He was credited with his first win in relief when the Cubs beat St. Louis on April 19, 1958. His final victory came on May 30 as the Cubs beat Los Angeles 10-8 when Dodgers reliever Sandy Koufax gave up a two-run homer to Walt Moryn in the ninth inning.
