Charles, whose mother was Jewish, toiled for his first nine years in baseball as a minor-league journeyman catcher. In his relentless pursuit of the major leagues, he even spent time in the independent Northern League. He finally reached the majors in 2000 at the age of 31, when he appeared in four games, going 4-for-7 with 2 RBIs, as a September call-up for the Houston Astros.
